Saturday Morning Physics 2018

The DSS team was invited to participate in the last of the "Saturday Morning Physics" (SMP) events in 2018. On December 8th, a Saturday of course, Thorben Kaak, Gerhard Schmidt, and Owe Wisch gave a talk on underwater signal processing. Pupils from all around Schleswig-Holstein were quite interested, especially in the basics of SONAR systems.

Night of the Profs 2018

On Friday, 16th of December the DSS team took part in the "Night of the Profs 2018". We got one of the "late-night" slots, meaning that our contribution started at 23 h. Our topic was on speech communication in "unusual" environments. If course, our attempts to improve speech communication in cars was presented, but also some of our student projects, such as the under water masks for the commucation among divers or swimmers. We presented the problems that one faces…

DSS-Retreat 2018

At the end of October (24.10.2018 till 27.10.2018) we spent again a few days on the island Sylt to reflect our past, current, and future research work. This included all Ph.D. topics but also the general direction of our research. Of course, also teaching and team related issues were discussed. Beside all that official work we also enjoyed the time on that beautiful island with several common activities.

Audiometer

Last Wednesday (17.10.2018) we obtained our first audiometer. With this audiometer we are able to conduct both pure-tone audiometry up to 12.5 kHz and basic speech intelligibility tests. The tests may be perfomed for either air/bone conduction or in the free field. Now we can analyze the hearing capabilities of our test subjects, which will help us when performing subjective tests. Special thanks to the DFG for financial support for the audiometer.

> Hello World.

Congratulations to Wiebke and Marco to their first baby. We don't want to share too much information about size and weight of young Jonte, since it has something of this card game "Quartett" that we played in our youth. Anyhow, we were pretty impressed by both numbers! One sentence about the title of this article: it's hard to see in the picture, but we ordered rompers for Jonte with the letters "> HELLO WORLD." on it. We are engineers, sorry.…

Philipp is now "Doc Bulling"

On Monday, 10th of September 2018, Philipp Bulling sucessfully defended his dissertation on speech enhancement for in-car communication systems. His work focused mainly on the control of adaptive feedback cancellation filters (details can be found here). After an excellent talk Philipp gave very good answers to the questions of the committee and at around 11:30 h everythings war over and we had a small celebration (thanks also to Philipp's parents for preparing that part of the defense). An finally of…

Summer Event 2018

Last Friday we clebrated our yearly summer event in combinantion with the summer meeting of the Gesellschaft für angewandte Signalverarbeitung e.V. First, the year was reviewed from the perspective of the professors (talk from Gerhard Schmidt), the Ph.D. students (talk from Finn Spitz), and the bachelor and master students (talk from Jonas Weiss and Alexander Wilbrandt). Afterwards Eric Elzenheimer (as beeing member of the executive Committee of GaS e.V.) handed over the price for the best thesis in the area…

New Low-delay Audio Hardware

Anton and Alexej are ready now with the preparation of our new low-delay hardware for our embedded lab. The hardware, so-called bela boards, can handle up to 10 inputs and 10 outputs and can operate with a round-trip delay of about 1 ms. The boards are programmed in C/C++ and allow for very "nice" audio examples. Currently we implement speech enhancement algorithms, anti-noise systems, and virtual reality approaches (in terms of "audio-only reality") as student projects using the boards. If…

Christening our First Boat

On July, 19th we christened our (first) small ship. It got the name "MISSy", which stands for "MIMO SONAR System". We did this at the "Kitzeberger Strand". Beside having a small party due to the event, we also did several measurements. One of them was testing a first version of our underwater telephone system. One subscriber was located at the pier, while the second one were Thorben and Alexej cruising with MISSy about 100 to 200 m in front of…
